The Heart Institutes at Apollo Hospitals India forms one of the largest groups of Cardiology and Cardio-Thoracic Surgery in the world. The scorecard shows an unmatched record of over 100,000 heart surgeries, which include bypass surgery, complicated coronary artery bypass surgery, surgery for all types of valvular heart disease and child heart surgery, with success rates comparable to international standards. The commitment of our cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons to the prevention and treatment of heart disease has led to the achievement of better outcomes and improved quality of life for thousands of cardiac patients who visit us each year, making Apollo Hospitals the most sought after hospital in India for bypass surgery and child heart surgery in India.
Cardiothoracic surgery involves the treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the chest (thorax), including treatment of conditions of the heart (heart disease) and lungs (lung disease). The Center of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Apollo Hospitals, India, is a Center of Excellence, which attracts thousands of patients, including international patients and performs virtually every type of heart surgery. The Center has performed over 90,000 surgeries making it one of the most experienced heart care centers in South East Asia. The cardio surgical unit has performed a wide range of surgeries - from neonatal open heart surgeries to aneurysm surgeries to heart transplants, with excellent results.
CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft)
A form of heart surgery that redirects blood around clogged arteries to increase blood flow and oxygen to the heart. This offers patients faster post-operative recovery with fewer complications. The cardiac surgeons at Apollo Hospitals, India have great expertise and experience with CABG surgeries. We are versatile and handle critically ill patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction or diffusely diseased vessels. As we avoid the heart - lung machine, we can take on patients for CABG even when there are associated morbidities such as renal disease, compromised lung function or other coexisting diseases. We do total arterial revascularization of the heart off-pump with varying configurations of arterial conduits such as left/right internal mammary arteries, radial arteries, and gastro-epiploic arteries individualized to patient's requirements.
Beating Heart Surgery
Coronary Bypass Surgeries are performed using contemporary techniques including the off-pump bypass. Over 98% of the surgeries are "off-pump" or "beating heart" surgeries. During off-pump or beating heart surgery, the heart-lung machine is not used. The surgeon uses advanced operating equipment to stabilize (hold) portions of the heart and bypass the blocked artery in a highly controlled operative environment. Meanwhile, the rest of the heart keeps pumping and circulating blood to the body. This offers patients faster post-operative recovery and extracts less of a toll on their systems.
Extensive and challenging thoracic procedures (lung, esophagus, etc.) are undertaken by our thoracic surgeons with the best results. These include operations for removal of malignancies from the lung and esophagus. They perform minimally invasive procedures on the lung and esophagus as well as VATS (Video-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery)
Chennai and New Delhi run the Heart Transplant Program. In 1995, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai became the first private hospital to carry out a successful heart transplant in the country. Since then 15 heart transplants have been carried out with unmatched clinical outcomes. Testimony to this excellence was the trust shown by an American patient last year who underwent a Heart Transplant at our facility in Chennai and is doing well.
Heart Valve Surgery
Specialized surgery which is performed for the treatment of abnormalities like Mitral Regurgitation (MR) (a valvular heart disease which results in the abnormal leaking of blood through the mitral valve, from the left ventricle into the left atrium of the heart), or Aortic Stenosis (a condition where the aortic valve becomes narrower than normal, impeding the flow of blood) are routinely performed.
Emergency Cardiac Surgery
Surgeries for treatment of complications caused by the dilatation of the aorta (aortic aneurysm), problems caused by irregular heart beat (arrhythmias - such as atrial fibrillation), heart failure, Marfan syndrome - a genetic disorder that causes cardiovascular abnormalities and other less common conditions are performed extensively.
