Common Cold and Flu


Most of us know the familiar signs of runny nose, sneezing, congestion, sore throat and cough. All symptoms of the common cold, what is medically known as viral upper respiratory tract infection.  But did you know that the viruses that cause the common cold can be spread through contact with objects, such as telephones, computers, books and pens?

Many viruses can cause the common cold and they can easily be transmitted through contaminated surfaces as mentioned above or by inhaling the airborne virus. As its name suggests, common cold is one of the world’s most frequently occurring illnesses.


Simple tips when you notice these symptoms are:

  • Gargle with lukewarm saline water 
  • Drink lots of fluids like fresh fruit juices, hot soups and water. They help flush out the virus and toxins.
  • Take an over-the-counter decongestant or one that you have been prescribed and usually use to ease symptoms
  • Avoid smoking and drinking
