GROWTH OF THE BABY:The baby weighs over 4 pounds and measures over 17 inches. Your little one has probably started to resemble you. The body is flexible enough to roll up and twist n turn because the bones, though developed, haven’t fused yet. This would assist in delivery. The baby’s bones will continue to harden even after it is born.
CHANGES IN MOTHER’S BODY:You would continue to feel wobbly with your belly fully grown by now. The discomfort you are experiencing is all for a good cause. Your metabolism would be higher than usual and might make you feel sweaty. Wear breezy clothes so that you allow your body to breathe. Your sleep might go for a toss so consider taking naps whenever you manage to.
IN FOCUS: WATER BIRTH
What seemed to be a relatively lesser-known and unconventional method of delivery is now gaining momentum in India for all the right reasons.
This form of delivering a baby is very safe and results in less labor pain. During a water birth, a mother gives birth to her child in a pool or tub full of water. Water improves the chances of a normal delivery without the use of any painkillers or drugs, which may be required in the conventional method. Water helps to provide relief from pain and offers great benefits to the woman in labor. Parents who are considering this option need not worry. There is no chance of the baby’s death due to asphyxiation or drowning. Immersion in warm water raises the body temperature and causes the blood vessels to dilate, resulting in increased blood circulation. Thus, larger quantities of blood and oxygen are able to reach the uterine muscles.
A water birth also allows a mother to maneuver her body during the labor process with the water offsetting the pressure experienced during childbirth. The hydrostatic pressure of the water relieves the discomforts of contractions and relaxes the body, which in turn stimulates the release of Endorphins-body’s natural painkillers.
Precautions: The water has to be pure and clean. It should also match the mother’s body temperature and it should be conducted under medical supervision only. In UK we have seen water birth deliveries taking place at home. But I would not advise the water birth for expectant mothers who are suffering severe infectious diseases. Because in that case the chances of the infection being passed onto the child cannot be ruled out. It should not be done for mothers with complications like previous CS, PIH , GDM , IUGR babies and oligoamnios. The patient has to be well selected for safety of water birth by their gynecologist.
