Week 18 Pregnancy

By now you know what it really means to have butterflies in your stomach. The baby’s fluttering is so obvious that it feels more like an entire farm of butterflies inside your belly. If you haven’t experienced quickening yet, you will feel it latest by 20th week. This week can be termed as the babymoon phase of pregnancy. The discomforts become very mild and your libido increases considerably.

GROWTH OF THE BABY: Your baby now measures above 5.5 inches and weighs about 7 ounces. The baby starts producing a protective covering along the nerves called myelin sheath. It continues to do that till it finally reaches your arms. The baby takes the big leap to become a unique individual, in this week. it will develop finger prints. Your little one would start becoming more reactive towards sounds. Hence try to remain in comforting ambiance, lest you would get a kick in your belly. The bones would become mightier through the process of ossification.

CHANGES IN MOTHER’S BODY: Forgetfulness is a common pregnancy symptom. Being sloppy and moony is just another phase.
Your blood pressure might remain slightly lower than normal. This may make you dizzy and lightheaded. It is advisable not to take abrupt actions. Be slow and composed at all times. Due to the shift in the center of gravity, your back muscles would bear the burden of your body weight. Hence backache might become the order of the day. Consult your healthcare expert it the pain is extreme.
Expecting mothers usually experience vivid dreams. This probably happens because of the overflowing advise from all directions that tend to leave you anxious.

DIET & FITNESS REGIME: The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggest that mothers to be must eat the following everyday:

  • 6 ounces of grains
  • 2.5 cups of vegetables (avoid overcooked food to retain nutrient value)
  • 1-2 cups of fruits
  • 5-5.5 ounces of meat and beans
  • 3 cups of milk and milk products
       An increase in appetite is obvious. However you need only 300 extra calories to make sure that the baby is getting its required supplies.                  

PURPLE HEALTH RECOMMENDS: Set reminders and sticky notes all around to remember vital stuff like taking medicines or other chores at work or home. This week, since you have a whole lot of new energy, you can consider taking prenatal classes. Besides being a great way of learning about childcare, it will help you in forming a sorority where you openly share your joys and woes revolving around pregnancy. You can also join some workout routines, especially designed for pregnant women. Use this time to get back on your feet. It will revitalize and rejuvenate you. Don’t fret over the things you can’t do. Instead, focus on the experiences and liberties that only you can enjoy. Have a happy pregnancy!
