GROWTH OF THE BABY: The baby has shown a marked development. The eyes and ears are moving towards their final resting place, making it more human like. The heart is in full swing, pumping 25 quarts of blood everyday. The baby’s external genitals become distinguishable. However, keeping it a surprise till the end might prove to be fun. The tiny arms and legs that you would dotingly massage are becoming more distinct. The fine body hair (lanugo) that had started sprouting earlier will now develop the eyebrows and the scalp.
The baby weighs about 2.5 ounces, measures around 4.5 inches and is about the size of an orange.

CHANGES IN MOTHER’S BODY: You may experience:

  • Discomfort in your gums, caused by redness, swelling, sensitivity or bleeding.
  • Gastric problems, constipation and heartburn might continue to affect you.
  • Bulging or lumpy varicose veins, especially in legs may give you cramps.
  • Your body is susceptible to catching urinary tract infection.

Your body is awash with hormones that would assist you in your pregnancy.
Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is the hormone that regulates the release of estrogen and progesterone.
Progesterone plays a vital role in fetal development. It prevents premature labor and lactation. It strengthens the pelvic muscles. It increases the uterine blood flow and stimulates the growth and nutrient production by the lining of the uterus.
Estrogen on the other hand assures the fetal organ development and functioning and growth of mammary glands.
The hormonal changes may cause a condition ‘rhinitis of pregnancy’ where you may experience clogged nose. Some cases experience nose bleeding too.

DIET & FITNESS REGIME: By now you must have learnt what to choose and what to avoid. There might be sudden hunger pangs and cravings. The idea is to stock the healthier options in your kitchen, every time you feel the need to binge. Here is a list of food items, curated for you, that would satiate you without adding the unnecessary calories.

  • Puffed rice (can be eaten by adding onions, tomato and a dash of lime)
  • Nuts
  • Dark chocolate
  • Jaggery
  • Cheese (no wine please)
  • Olives
  • Fresh fruits
  • Smoothies
  • Low fat flavored yogurt (ditch the ice cream)

  • Unusual or severe cramps in the abdomen
  • Vaginal spotting or bleeding
  • Shortness of breath
  • Any other discomfort that is persistent

As your body starts adapting and the mind gets the hang of pregnancy, your emotions might experience a sea change. Conversation is the key to maintain your sanity. Keep your partner involved. Share every minute detail with him. Your sex drive may either heighten or disappear. Every pregnancy is unique. Enjoy your time.
