Week 13 Pregnancy

The first phase of your journey is on the verge of being over. You are in the last week of your first trimester.

GROWTH OF THE BABY: The baby has been on a roll, growing miraculously and speedily, with every passing week. By this week, the sex organs become fully visible. For the first time, you can sense the life within you with the help of an external Doppler. The endearing heartbeat of your baby can be clearly heard. The salivary glands activate and the vocal cords are under construction. The lungs are still evolving. The baby continues to inhale and exhale the amniotic fluid. Sweat glands develop and the nervous system continues to undergo maturation. The bone marrow starts manufacturing the white blood cells. The baby is about 2.5 inches long, about the size of a big peach. The baby’s movements develop further by this week.

CHANGES IN MOTHER’S BODY: Your body produces the hormone, Relaxin, which loosens up the ligaments and joints. It is a preparation for childbirth. It would tend to make you clumsier. From feeling lethargic to dropping stuff around, your body feels different and difficult to deal with. Even though you need the extra kick of the hormone, only in your pelvis, it works on the entire body, leaving you disheveled. The risk of miscarriage is now much lower than the initial weeks. You can look forward to a time of relative comfort. There is more to cheer for. Post this week, many women find a splurge in their sex drive. You may consider exercising since the body will allow you some mild exercise forms.

The breasts start forming colostrum, a nutrient rich fluid. Most women don’t realize this phenomenon until the milk begins to leak. This power food for the baby is rich in antibodies and immunoglobins.

DIET & FITNESS REGIME: Here is a list of 10 super foods for the baby and the mother to be:
